- AudreyNAME: AUDREY BREED: Border Collie Mix FOSTER TOWN: Berwick, ME AGE: 1 year old QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: 2 Audrey Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: White or Cream, Black Coat length: Short Audrey’s Story: “Audrey is house and crate trained. She did very well in her crate overnight. She loves to go on long walks, and is very good with the family cat. This is what her former owner told our partner shelter about Audrey. Audrey loves to jump and play as she is full of energy. Playing with toys is one of her favorite things. She gives freely her love and kisses. Audrey enjoys howling at the moon and playing queen of the hill by getting on top of her doghouse. We have noticed at LP that she likes to climb on top of our gravel pile too and will observe everything going on around her while soaking up some sun. Her former owner also told the shelter that Audrey does play fetch, gets up and down when told, and will stay back when told. Audrey is not completely house broken as she has not been in the house for a while. When she was inside, Audrey was a BIG bed hog and loved sleeping with her. Audrey is spayed, up-to-date on shots, and is HW preventative. She weighed 45.8 lbs when she went in to be spayed on July 11.” Audrey’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Berwick, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- RudyNAME: RUDY BREED: Beagle FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: 5 1/2 years old QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: 2 Rudy Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: Tricolor (Brown, Black & White) Coat length: Short Rudy’s Story: “Rudy is 5 and 1/2 years old. He is currently being fostered at a foster home in Portland, Maine. His former owners described him as sweet, affectionate, and loyal. He is house trained, walks well on a leash, and rides great in a car. Rudy does enjoy sleeping with his people in bed or taking a nap next to them on the couch, but he does snore occasionally. Rudy has lost some weight since he has been in Maine and is looking quite Dapper! He is a tri-colored neutered male that is full of spunk and energy. Rudy is a typical beagle. He loves to investigate and can definitely follow his nose if not contained. Rudy loves playing with his current housemate or by himself. He can entertain himself with a toy or ball. He may be 5 years old, but he displays the playfulness of a 2 year old. Rudy is very good on leash for his size. He walks well and doesn’t pull. He currently gets a 2-3 mile walk a day plus playtime in the yard all day with his housemates. At feeding time Rudy has learned to sit and wait for his command to eat and takes treats very gently. Rudy’s a great boy, full of life and energy, just looking for a forever home. As any beagle lover knows, there’s nothing more lovable than that deep raspy bark when you’re greeted coming home at the end of a long day. This sweet boy loves everyone he meets. He is also helpful around the house as he is quick to clean up any food that the children drop on the floor. Playing with other dogs, going to the dog park, going for walks, and chewing raw hides are some of his favorite things to do when he isn’t napping. While he does enjoy playing fetch, he prefers being fetched more. Rudy does dig if he gets bored.” Rudy’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Portland, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- XavierNAME: XAVIER BREED: Black Labrador Retriever FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: 6 months QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: 6-HSSC-Xavier Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: Black Coat length: Medium Xavier’s Story: “Xavier and his siblings were left at a veterinarian’s office in Texarkana in a plastic bucket with the lid on and a note that said, “Just couldn’t take care of them.” They were left in 90+ degree weather, and when they were discovered, one had already died. There are 5 boys left. Like his siblings, Xavier is 6 months old, weighing around 50 pounds. He will be a big beautiful boy when fully grown! He is very friendly, high energy, and playful. Also, he does well with cats and older kids. He jumps up, and he can be a bit mouthy so a home with young kids would not be ideal until he is trained a bit. In his foster home, he is doing well with the resident dogs, and he is doing well with house training. However, he is still getting used to the crate at night. Overall, his ideal forever home would include lots of love, playtime, and training.” Xavier’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Portland, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- LukaNAME: NORRIE BREED: Chow Chow mix FOSTER TOWN: Biddeford, ME AGE: 7 years old (Qualifies for the senior adoption rate) QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: Luka OS AJ Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Prefers a home without: cats and young children Primary colors: Apricot or Beige, Red, Chestnut or Orange Coat length: Medium Luka’s Story: “Luka is pretty mellow, but would prefer a home without young children that may pull on him or startle him while he is sleeping. Sweet, sweet Luka is a Chow mix who is need of a cat-free forever home. Poor Luka was pulled from a shelter in California that euthanizes because of lack of space. He was taken to a rescue in the California area and sent to a home in Maine. The family was told that Luka would be fine to share a home with cats, but this was not the case. The rescue did not take Luka back and left Luka’s family with the heartbreak of falling in love with him and then having to let him go. Luka has been around children, other dogs and strangers and has been exemplary. He is pleasant at the groomers and is a mellow gentleman who is more of a couch potato type. His excitement consists of wagging his tail when you come home and wagging his tail when it’s time for a walk. Did we say walk? He LOVES to go for walks and loves to roll in the grass and play with other dogs. Luka has been neutered and is up to date on all of his vaccinations, including kennel cough. He is also micro-chipped.” Luka’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Biddeford, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- SageNAME: SAGE BREED: Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: 18 months QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: 6-HSSC-Sage Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: Black Coat length: Short Sage’s Story: “Sage was pulled from a kill shelter on March 10, 2010. This handsome boy spent his whole life in a shelter until his arrival in Maine on March 12, 2010. He is now about 18 months old. Sage has a gorgeous black coat with white spotted feet and white specks all over his face. He is a medium sized dog, weighing around 50 pounds. He loves to play, run and fetch. In fact, his foster mom says he can easily run for 6 miles. That said, he is doing better on a leash but can be stubborn at times; sitting in the middle of a walk and refusing to move. Sage is very affectionate and adores human attention. He loves to give kisses and cuddle. Sage adores human contact and when he falls asleep on the couch, he likes to have his head right up against his foster mom. She absolutely adores him! He also likes to get belly rubs when he is on his back. Sage gets along well with other dogs. Currently, he lives with 2 other dogs, ranging in age from 7 months-15 years old. He does not do well as an “only child” as he needs other dogs to follow. Sage loves to play with the other dogs, but he also likes to lounge on the couch. In addition, he does well with cats. He is crate trained and his foster family is working on basic obedience training as he likes to jump on people; he would do well in a home with older kids and adults. Younger children would not be a good fit. Foster mom update as of July 2011- “He’s a love bug with me and my son, but he is still warming up to my husband…we’re working on that. He’s learning some basic commands and manners, does ok on walks. LOVES being in the car! He’s a great dog who just wants to be with his people!” Overall, Sage’s ideal forever home would be living with a loving family who would spoil him with attention, give him proper guidance and provide lots of playtime.” Sage’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Biddeford, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- JenniNAME: JENNI BREED: Greyhound/Labrador Retriever FOSTER TOWN: Berwick, ME AGE: 6 months QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: AO 03 Jenni Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: White or Cream, Brown or Chocolate Coat length: Short Jenni’s Story: “Jenni is finally in Maine and will make someone a wonderful companion! She is crate trained and about 40 pounds. Jenni is not aggressive in any way and would do best with a dog-savvy owner, as she is a little shy to start out. Once she gets in your lap, she is a total lover! She is also great with other animals and children. Her favorite things here are cuddling, feeding time and cookies. She was brought to the shelter on Saturday, September 10, 2011. She was found in someone’s yard and had a terrible eye infection. We discovered that her eyelash on her right eye was inverted. She had surgery on 09/15/2011 to repair the eyelash. Jenni is white in color with a brown patch over her left eye! Please help us find Jenni a forever home!” Jennis’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Portland, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- MaxyNAME: MAXY BREED: Black Labrador Retriever FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: 4 months QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: 6-HSSC-Maxy Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: Black Coat length: Medium Maxy’s Story: “Maxy was found on the side of the road in the Dequeen, Arkansas area. This sweet little guy is around 4 months, weighing 20 pounds. He is good with kids, loves his toys, and is a very happy boy. He is close to being totally potty trained, and he is really energetic, which is typical of any pup. Maxy loves toys, and he really likes toys he can chew on as he is teething. His foster mom says he is is doing well on a leash too. Maine foster family update- He is high energy and will take every opportunity to play. Also, he is very good with kids and other animals, but until he gets past teething, I would suggest no infants. You wouldn’t believe it, but he can jump REALLY HIGH and Maxy his is quite trainable, (it took only two days for him to learn going to the identified door for outside and sitting to wait until his leash is on), and he responds well to his name. Last, he does well in a crate, although does not yet go in without prompting.” Maxy’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Portland, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- JacksonNAME: JACKSON BREED: Chesapeake Bay Retriever/Basset Hound FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: Unknown QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: 8-OS-Jackson-AJ Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Prefers a home without: cats and young children Primary colors: Yellow, tan, brown or fawn Coat length: Medium Jackson’s Story: “He has made wonderful strides in his training, playing well with the dogs in his foster home. He seems to love them all! Jackson has most recently mastered the command “Leave It”, which is a huge step for him. He also knows “Heal”, “Sit”, “Wait” and “Come”. He actually prefers getting attention and loves getting treats! Jackson is a handsome and sweet boy. His previous owner surrendered him because he mistook his big smile for an aggressive snarl. Currently, he is working with a professional behaviorist who has the following to say about him, “Jackson is good with calm dogs, and seems to prefer female dogs best. Busy body dogs make him a bit nervous, so he will do well in a home with none, or only one calm female dog. Owing to his territorial tendencies, he is not allowed on any furniture. However, when he did get up, he was lured off with a goody and he happily complied. He is overly interested in cats, so it would take a dog-savvy cat to be with him as he is a bit pushy. He loves the outdoors, is medium energy level, and is learning to come, sit, down and shake for his meals. He is a good watchdog and will alert-bark, but will not hold his ground. He backs off when strangers enter. He does very well with his toys and food bowl, and is house trained. Jackson ended up with a piece of pizza that was left out and when his foster mom said, “leave it” he put it down and calmly walked over to her. He does sleep in an open crate. Overall, he really is very sweet! With proper guidance, lots of love and continued training, Jackson will make a wonderful companion.” Jackson’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Portland, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- JamisNAME: LUKA BREED: Labrador Retriever/Great Dane FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: 2 years old QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: OS_8_AS Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Primary colors: Black Coat length: Medium Jamis’ Story: “Jamis was adopted from a Tennessee shelter in 2010. Reluctantly, his owner needed to surrender him due to life changes. This handsome boy is close to two years old, weighing 87 pounds. Jamis is very energetic. He loves to run, play, and go for lots of walks. He would be a perfect companion for a VERY active couple who is outdoorsy because he loves to swim, play fetch and retrieve. Also, he is very affectionate, as he loves to give licks, get rubs, take baths and snuggle in bed with his owner. Although Jamis loves to play with other dogs and people, he will happily play with toys too. He does fine with cats as well. Jamis does suffer from separation anxiety disorder so he would do best in a home with other dogs and obedience training. Jamis is house trained, and he knows basic commands like “sit”, “down”, and “go pee”. He LOVES kids. His previous owner says, “He has been trained to be gentle with infants, so he will look up at me before approaching to make sure it is okay, and will periodically look up at me to make sure I am okay with his play behavior. My baby niece loves him to pieces and hugs him constantly.” Overall, this gorgeous boy’s ideal forever home would include a big back yard, an active couple, playtime, obedience training and lots of love.” Jamis’ Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Biddeford, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
- CaseyNAME: CASEY BREED: Chow Chow Mix FOSTER TOWN: Portland, ME AGE: 3 years old QUICK FACTS: Pet ID: Casey LS KB Spayed/Neutered Up-to-date with routine shots House trained Prefers a home without: young children Primary colors: Black Coat length: Medium Casey’s Story: “Casey is a beautiful fuzzy boy who is looking for his perfect family. He is a 3-year-old Chow mix who will make a wonderful companion for the right person or adult family. In his former home, Casey loved and was much beloved by his two caretakers. But they had a lot of friends and family who dropped in often, and Casey never could get used to all that. They wanted him to be a part of all the activity, and that just wasn’t Casey’s style. He would like a home where there is not a lot of coming & going of unfamiliar people. Little people (who move in strange & sudden ways) make him nervous, so Casey needs to live in a home where children are infrequent visitors. Casey is a happy, playful & affectionate dog when he is comfortable. He can be protective of his family, and strangers sometimes make him nervous, so he’d really rather go to a quiet room or a kennel where he feels safe when you have visitors. Casey reserves his plentiful affection and goofiness for his special people. He is somewhat independent and doesn’t see the need to follow you from room to room as you work around the house. But he will lie quietly at your feet, and he loves belly rubs from his favorite people. As for cats, Casey does fine with dog-savvy cats. He’ll chase them if they run, but its play, not serious. If the cat stops running, he doesn’t know what to do. As long as a cat has a way to escape from him if its not in the mood for his games, they will do fine together. Casey is medium energy, absolutely loving his two walks per day, and any time he can get hanging out in the yard. Ideally, he will be adopted to a home with a fenced yard. Because of his protectiveness, he must be on a leash or in a safe place if left outside. He does very well staying in the house during the daytime while his foster mom & dad are at work. He doesn’t chew on things or counter-surf, and is perfectly house-trained. He is quiet most of the time, only barking when he’s excited or maybe just a little when he is first left alone. Casey shows no interest in getting on the furniture. Casey knows sit, down, & stay. He has gone to training classes for the past several months. His trainer likes him very much, and since he feels the first three days with a new family are critical, he is offering a free telephone consultation to his adopters, to help Casey adjust quickly. Casey would definitely benefit from continued training with his new family. He is very smart and ready to learn. He needs someone who will take the time to understand him, and be firm but kind. His beautiful long black fur needs regular attention. His foster mom has been brushing him in frequent short sessions, because his previous family reported that he was very frightened at both the groomer and at the vet. Casey rides beautifully in a car. He also walks well on leash with an Easy Walk harness (the leash attaches at the chest). He is sometimes reactive to other dogs while he is being walked, and needs someone who knows or will learn how to manage this. All in all, Casey is a very nice and fun dog. He does need someone who will understand his nature and will be patient with his reactions to situations that make him nervous. In return, Casey has devotion and great companionship to offer.” Casey’s Contact Info Almost Home Rescue of Maine, Portland, ME Email Almost Home Rescue of Maine See more pets from Almost Home Rescue of Maine For more information, visit the Almost Home Rescue of Maine web site.
