Scoop – October 2017

Charlie (fka Scoop)
I can’t believe it’s been a whole year with Charlie! It seems not too long ago we were anxiously driving to pick him up, and drove home with a sweet but nervous pup. Charlie has stolen our hearts (and a sizable amount of our bed) since then. He hit it off immediately with our dog Roger, so much so that he was friendly but generally aloof when it came to my husband and I. Then two or three months into having him, it was like Charlie looked at us and was like “hey you guys are AWESOME! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!” it was so funny! I don’t know if Roger was too interesting to pull himself away from until then, or he was just getting to used to our home and his crate and everything else, but Charlie really blossomed into the lovable goofball he is, he was just slow to come out of his shell.

Now Charlie’s days are mostly spent chewing, chewing, chewing (our collection of nylabones is impressive), playing with Roger, chasing squirrels around the yard, protecting our son Silas, and cuddling with me at all possible opportunities. At his core, I think Charlie is a lazy man who just wants to snuggle up and nap. That being said, when we take the dogs out in the woods for an off leash romp, Charlie usually hangs back near me, because he is always aware of the keeper of treats, but when he moves, he MOVES. Watching him sprint and topple through the trees and leap over logs is impressive for such a lazy dog. After ten minutes of marathon sprinting, he’s ready to slowly trot and sniff the rest of the way.

I’m sure you can see from the photos that Charlie is AMAZING with our six-month-old son, Silas. We really thought Charlie wouldn’t be too interested when we brought the baby home, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. Charlie has followed Silas everywhere since the moment he came home. As much as he is still a puppy and will jump and play a little rough with us or Roger, he is 100% gentle around Silas. He follows me upstairs when I change his diaper, and waits outside the nursery door when I put him down for a nap. Sweet doesn’t begin to describe Charlie and Silas together. My husband and I would sometimes joke around that Roger is my dog, and Charlie is his, but since Silas has been born, we both agree that Charlie is Silas’ dog, we just didn’t know it when we adopted him!
We are so happy we were able to adopt Charlie! Rescue dogs have a huge part of my heart, and I can’t wait until the day we can open our home to more, whether it be adoption or fostering. We are so grateful to everyone that had a hand in caring for our Charlie until he came home to us. We love him so much! Thank you for everything you do for these amazing dogs!
