Quartz – February 2018

Hazel (fka Quartz)

We are doing great. We didn’t get definitive results from the December blood work. Still elevated numbers in the blood work, but everything else about her (including ultrasounds) showed perfect health. So, we decided to work on her training and hope things improved. I spoke with the man who owns the local Pet shop (Four Your Paws Only) and he suggested we crate her even when we are home in the house….do this any time that we are not 100% engaged with her. I never thought to do that because we wanted her with us, but with 3 kids we are often distracted, and Hazel would know that and walk off and pee everywhere. We would play with her, then crate her….when we let her out, we would take her immediately outside to pee and then either back to the crate or let her out to play. Within a week or 2, we saw HUGE improvement. She still needs frequent trips outside, but she has only had maybe 5 accidents since early January, compared with 20+ per day. She is in love with her big brother dog, Toby, as you can see from the pictures….she follows him everywhere and they wrestle and chase squirrels together. The picture of them in the window is how they spend a lot of time…squirrels come on the deck and eat the seed dropped from the bird feeders and the two of them don’t move a muscle….quite a pair! She also loves the snow and could play in it for hours. She has taken over as my jogging partner. She stays right with me for about 3-4 miles and never strays off. She is an all-around wonderful family dog and we are thrilled to have her in our family.
